MEDINA ESSAOUIRA MOROCCO

Nestled between golden dunes and the Atlantic Ocean, Essaouira, formerly known as Mogador, charms travellers with its authenticity and timeless spirit. A city of winds, artists and dreamers, it captivates visitors with its unique light, golden ramparts and blue alleyways that exude a gentle way of life. Here, time passes differently, to the rhythm of the waves and smiles.

The History of Essaouira between sea and light

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Medina of Essaouira is a masterpiece of harmonious architecture. Founded in the 18th century by Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah, the city was designed by French architect Théodore Cornut, giving rise to a unique city: Moroccan in spirit, but open to the world in its design. Once a strategic port linking Africa, Europe and the East, Essaouira was the beating heart of the spice, gold and precious wood trade. Even today, its ramparts bear witness to centuries of trade, encounters and tolerance.

A vibrant and diverse culture

Essaouira is a true crossroads of cultures. Jews, Muslims, Berbers, Africans and Europeans have together shaped a city where diversity is celebrated. Every year, the Gnaoua and World Music Festival brings the narrow streets of the medina to life: drums, mystical songs and guembris resonate in a spirit of sharing and freedom. But culture in Essaouira is also part of everyday life: in art galleries, thuja wood workshops, spice markets and cafés facing the sea, where the scents of cumin, argan oil and sea air mingle.

A city of emotions and gentleness

Strolling through Essaouira means surrendering to the simple beauty of things. In the morning, the harbour comes alive with blue boats and fishermen returning with their nets full. At midday, the light caresses the white and blue facades of the medina. And in the evening, the sunsets set the horizon ablaze, offering scenes that you will never forget.

Essaouira is a city that you feel — with your heart more than with your eyes. It invites you to slow down, breathe, and reconnect with yourself and the sea.
