Festival musique essaouira

Essaouira, the pearl of the Atlantic, is not only charming with its blue streets, ramparts and sunsets. It also vibrates to the rhythm of music all year round. Four major festivals enliven the city of the trade winds: the Festival des Alizés, the Gnaoua and World Music Festival, the MOGA Festival, and the Festival des Andalousies Atlantiques. These are all opportunities to discover Essaouira in a different light — through culture, emotions and encounters.

The Festival des Alizés: classical music by the ocean

For more than 20 years, every spring, Essaouira has been decked out in all its finery to host the Festival des Alizés, dedicated to classical music. It is also the only classical music festival in Morocco! Led by Dina Bensaid, pianist, conductor of the Moroccan Philharmonic Orchestra and director of the Tenor Foundation for Culture, the Festival des Alizés welcomes young talents and internationally renowned artists. Every year, the most beautiful works from the classical repertoire come to life in historic venues such as Dar Souiri and the North Bastion. The concerts are free, subject to availability. We at Riad Lyon Mogador are very proud to be partnering with this event for the second year running.

The Gnaoua and World Music Festival: the soul of Essaouira

The ultimate symbol of the city, the Gnaoua and World Music Festival brings together thousands of enthusiasts from all over the world every June. Gnaoua maâlems share the stage with jazz, reggae, funk and rock musicians, creating unique and hypnotic fusions. Three days of festival during which several hundred artists offer an unforgettable musical experience, blending ancestral traditions and contemporary influences.

Since 1998, when it was first established, people have been dancing, singing and experiencing music in its most spiritual and universal form in the main squares and narrow streets of the medina. It is a powerful moment, when the soul of Essaouira reveals itself in all its depth.

The MOGA Festival: electronic music by the Atlantic Ocean

In recent years, Essaouira has also established itself as a key venue for electronic music thanks to the MOGA Festival. More than just a festival, MOGA is a holistic experience combining electronic music, spirituality and visual arts. All this takes place in the city's legendary venues.

Between hidden riads, seaside venues and exclusive spots in the UNESCO-listed medina, DJs and digital creators transform the city into a veritable artistic laboratory. Every October, MOGA attracts a cosmopolitan and connected community who come to celebrate the freedom, creativity and bohemian spirit of Essaouira. This is a festival not to be missed if you enjoy electronic music and festive atmospheres by the ocean.

The Atlantic Andalusia Festival: the memory of cultures

Every autumn since 2003, Essaouira has celebrated its Andalusian heritage with the Festival of Atlantic Andalusia. A true tribute to the richness of Jewish-Muslim heritage and the universality of music, its programme combines tradition, memory and modernity. A moment of emotion and sharing, where music becomes a language of peace and memory. This festival perfectly illustrates the spirit of openness and tolerance that makes Essaouira a city apart.
